Going camping? Don't go without this list of camping food essentials!

When you pack to go camping, space is at a premium. Whatever you decide to bring, don't forget the foods that will serve you best:

1. Bananas

Fruit is always a great idea to pack for camping because many fruits (apples, pears, oranges, etc.) are fine when left at room temperature. But my favorite and omnipresent camping fruit is always bananas. High in potassium and other nutrients, bananas are the perfect solution when you need something fast, filling and easily transportable. Plus, you can always put them on bread that’s been spread with peanut butter for a camp-friendly breakfast.

2. Bread

Bread is shelf-stable and can be used in so many ways: for morning toast, as make-shift hot dog and hamburger buns and as the base for sandwiches galore. Plus, if you want to feed the birds (preferably far away from the campsite), bread is prime for throwing.

3. Peanut Butter & Jelly

You don’t have to eat these together, but you should pack ‘em together. It’s easy and fast to make a PBJ for a quick bite when camping. They can be used separately too - jelly for toast in the morning, or peanut butter (with banana and bread) for breakfast or a snack.

4. Nature Valley Bars

Whether for a quick snack or as part of breakfast (served with fruit!), Nature Valley Bars always go camping with my family. Our collective favorite? Peanut Butter, for sure.

5. Graham crackers, marshmallows and chocolate

Wait, that’s three foods! Forgive me, but these have to be lumped together … same as they have to make the camping food must-pack list. What’s a campfire without s’mores?!?

And if I could add just a few more must-haves:

  • Water

  • Instant iced coffee packets (my fav are the ones from that coffee shop chain)

  • A bottle or two of a sports drink (the electrolytes are important if anyone gets a little dehydrated)
