BBQ Appetizers and Snack Recipes

When we're planning the Tablespoon blogging schedule, my editor and I trade a lot of emails discussing topics and approaches. When it came to settling on this topic, she wondered if an article talking about little bites to eat at a barbecue (or do you prefer BBQ?) should be titled BBQ Appetizers or Snacks ...


Around my part of the country, these are always called appetizers.  But I did a little Googling, I found that to others, they are definitely snacks. Heck, there are probably a dozen names for dishes for these. What do you call them?


Anyway, when we're planning a backyard party, we always include a few appetizers or snacks to eat pre-meal. Some are cooked, some are uncooked. All are delicious.


For my appetizers, I always like to lay out some chips or crackers with a good dip or spread. Some of my favorites are Caramelized Shallot Hummus, Sundried Tomato Spread or Fruity Salsa. Also good would be Cilantro-Lime Salsa or Fresh Tomato Salsa.



If you want something off the grill, Grilled Potato Wedges with Barbecue Dipping Sauce would be a tasty way to kick things off. Or try something delicious and imaginative like Bacon-Wrapped Shrimp.


Also delicious in summer is a Tomato Mozzarella Platter (haven't I mentioned before how much I adore that combination?). A platter of Hummus and Cucumber Bites or Bruschetta could be perfect for serving too.
