My friends and I are really into movie quotations...and barbecues.
I would estimate that about 35 percent of our speech is actually just hilarious movie quotes. So when we fired up the grill for the first time this season, we declared every Friday would be “BBQ at Best Man’s House”—a reference to a scene in Meet the Parents,
featuring a party that’s supremely awkward and excellent at the same time.
But our BBQs are not awkward at all! In fact, they’re quite the opposite. A barbecue is comfortable and low-stress, and a great cap to the end of the work week. You know your friends need something to look forward to after the 9-to-5 grind, so why not start your own BBQ every Friday night?
Here's a few ways on how to barbecue like a champ:
1.) Provide a variety of meats.
If you’re anything like me, you’re friends with (or married to) big guys who only eat beef or brats, health-conscious women who prefer turkey burgers, and even a vegetarian or two. I’m not saying you need to have every type of exotic flesh out there, but if you give the people what they want, they’re sure to come back next time.

2.) Don’t go broke.
Yes, I do think the host has the responsibility of providing the “meat” or the “main dish,” but it is NOT your responsibility to provide all the side dishes or booze. Have your friends pitch in. May I recommend Tater Tots? They’re a huge hit at our BBQs. A Friday BBQ and Tater Tots: I don’t think it can get better than this.
3.) Speaking of hosting duties...
Switch it up so you don’t get burned out. You don’t always have to offer up your digs.
4.) Use your finest plastic-ware and paper plates.
Note: I adore my wedding china. I love fancy dinners. I am not someone who is against all things frou-frou. That said, for goodness sake, use paper plates and napkins for your BBQ. It’s OKAY! And you’ll be thankful when clean-up takes five seconds.
5.) Have a winning appetizer or dessert.
This is a key element for hosting any party. Don’t you want to be known as the person who makes THE best chocolate chip cookies, spinach dip, or whatever? I know I do. My signature BBQ treat: BBQ at Best Man’s House Guacamole
. The recipe is simple, but always a success. I have been known to make non-avocado-eaters change their tune with this delicious snack.
