Blueberry picking, anyone?

We barely squeaked in strawberry picking this year, since the season came so early to Connecticut. So, my berry-picking partner and my kids and I aren't letting that happen with blueberries ... No. Way. We're going in about a week.

Now, when it comes to berry picking, my friend and I have a go-big-or-go-home philosophy. She has developed a whole special get-up that entails a belt, a basket and a swift picking method so she can maximize her harvest. As for me, I aim to pick as much as I can carry (which is a lot, thankyouverymuch).

What do we do with all those berries? Half or more of them are frozen for the winter. My method for freezing is simple: rinse the berries under cool water. Let them totally dry on paper towels and then spread in a single layer on a waxed paper lined baking sheet. Freeze overnight. Then, transfer to an airtight freezer container or resealable bag. Easy -- and then you have those amazing berries whenever you want them.

A portion of the berries also goes into baked goods. Inevitably, the morning after berry picking, I get a hankering for something like Lemon Blueberry Muffins or  Blueberry Oatmeal Cake. Both are fabulous, delicious breakfast items that are easy to whip up and enjoy. Blueberry Scones are always a great idea too. Mmm. Scones!

We also eat a ton of the blueberries as snacks, with meals and whenever. I swear, my kids can eat their weight in them.

Of course, blueberries are great in desserts like Fresh Blueberry Cobbler, Blueberry Cheesecake Bars, Fresh Blueberry Pie and Blueberry Buckle too ...

How do you like your blueberries?
