Do you have plans for Mother's Day? Although some tsk at it as a commercial holiday, it's a fabulous day celebrating mothers everywhere. I hope you are doing something special for the moms in your life.

Even if you don't have plans, it's not too late to do something extra special ... like breakfast in bed. It's a step out of the ordinary - bringing the treats to the woman who does so much.

Seriously, I have been dropping hints about wanting breakfast in bed to my husband for the last five years. So far? No dice. But this year, I have just been blunt with him: I want a manicure and breakfast in bed. Easy peasy.

What makes a good breakfast in bed?

  • Her favorite morning beverage. I'm a coffee-addict, so a steaming cup with a little skim milk and a bit of sugar is perfect for me. But tea, OJ, water ... whatever she loves is perfect. An Iced Vanilla Soy Latte sounds delish too.

  • A simple dish. Seriously. Instead of aiming for something inexplicably gourmet, plan something that is bed-friendly like a perfect omelet, fresh muffins or a fabulous toasted bagel with a smear of cream cheese, a swipe of butter or a bit of lox. Avoid anything that could be too messy (cereal, pancakes and waffles with syrup, etc).

  • A bit of fruit. Adding a little fruit to the plate can take a breakfast from an ordinary meal to something special (especially if they have good color!) Hint: Strawberries are just coming into season and would make a lovely, brilliant pop on the plate.

  • A flower. What? Flowers are pretty ... adding one single blossom or bloom to the tray is such a cute touch.

  • Utensils, napkins, etc. Yes, it might be edging on obvious, but these things are 100-percent necessary.

Now, will someone please send this to my husband? I want to make sure he really gets the message this year.
