Some might call it blasphemy, but beer is fabulous in cooking. There is something about the delicious body of a good lager or stout that goes so well in everything from soup to bread. Really, absolutely, delicious.

One of my very favorite things to do with beer is to make Beer Steamed Clams. When I was a little girl, my family used to buy clams and grill them on the charcoal grill. A can of beer would be poured over to enhance their flavor. So, I set about to make a recipe that had some of that same delicious beer steam without the charcoal. The result is this pan version, which can be made on their a grill or the stove. Either way, they are delicious.


Another fabulous thing to do with beer is to make bread. Yes, bread. Using a self-rising flour, beer makes this dough rise perfectly. My No Knead Cheddar Beer Bread, for instance, is ridiculously easy to make, and so, so, so tasty too. The cheddar gives the bread a nice salty richness. Serve it warm with a small pat of butter. Your guests will never guess that there were only three ingredients.


And of course, one of the most popular things to do with beer -- batter fish with it. This recipe is a little more dinner-like and it sounds absolutely delicious. It's Betty Crocker's recipe for Beer Batter Fish, and it claims to get a great crunch on the crust, thanks to the beer.
