Trying to impress a date or even just your mom? Learning how to make rice shows that you know your way around the kitchen and have a special touch that turns out perfect, fluffy rice without a bit of stickiness or mushiness.


Begin by rinsing your rice. Sounds weird, I know, but think about it: The dried grain has been sealed in a package for potentially months, so it can't hurt to give it a quick wash to get rid of any dust or debris.


Next, boil your water. Remember to use about 1 3/4 cups of water for every cup of rice you're making. Keep in mind when measuring out your rice that the stuff will expand and feed way more people than it looks like it would in the measuring cup. In fact, the grain will just about double in volume.


After your water reaches a boil, season it with about a teaspoon of salt before adding your rice. Stir the mixture to separate the rice, but don't whip it to the point where it becomes sticky.


Then, cover the pot and bring it to a simmer for about 18 minutes. When time's up, take the pot off the stove and let the residual steam and heat do its job for another five minutes.


Just fluff your finished product with a fork, and you have Chinese restaurant-quality rice that is FTW.
