I love Indian flavors, but I don't often cook Indian at home because it isn't something that I'm completely comfortable with. Ask me to throw together an Italian pasta dish and I'm there. I think in part it's because I didn't grow up eating Indian. I think until my teen years the only Indian spice I'd even tasted was yellow curry powder, and that was in an Americanized casserole. When I did try a few more traditional Indian recipes, whether at home or restaurant, I loved it!
That's one of the great things about trying new foods and flavors. You often find a taste that is nothing like you've ever had, and you love it. And if you don't, you just move on.
I also didn't grow up eating a lot of seafood, aside from the occasional shrimp and tuna fish sandwiches (which I still to this day don't like). I've been trying to set a good example for my kids and try foods that are out of my comfort zone, hoping that they will see it is okay to do the same. If you don't like it -- no pressure!
I decided to combine salmon, something that I have only eaten a handful of times in my life and haven't quite acquired the taste for yet, with flavors I know that I already enjoy. This Indian Spice Rub for Salmon recipe was a great compromise. I'm definitely becoming more comfortable cooking and eating seafood each time I try.
