Sweet and salty. Oh, the joys.

Of all the flavor combinations possible, sweet and salty is one of my very, very favorites - if not my favorite. It's the reason that chocolate covered pretzels are a coveted homemade gift and also the reason why grilled cheese sandwiches with apple butter can be so comforting.

But one of the best, most wonderful, most delicious sweet-salty foods is caramel. My coffee of choice? A caramel latte. My ice cream topping of choice? You guessed it! Caramel. It's a serendipitous mix of wonderful sweetness and savory saltiness ... simply irresistible.

I've been digging around recipes trying to find the perfect salty caramel dishes to share with you. The very first to catch my eye was Caramel Brownies. Swirls of caramel on top of a thick layer of fudgy brownie? Oh, yes please!

Then I saw this amazing, elegant Caramel Custard. Doesn't it make you drool a little? You start by making a delicious, fresh layer of caramel. Then you top it with custard and bake it gently until set.

Of course something like Ooey Gooey Turtle Bars or Chocolately Caramel Layer Bars could be amazing too.

Ultimately though, I decided to go with the classic caramel sweet: Caramel Corn. Freshly popped corn is tossed with a homemade caramel sauce and then baked for a bit. Finally, it's left to cool (and harden). Then you devour it.

Want to turn up the flavor in any of these caramel recipes? Add a sprinkle of sea salt (in the case of the custard, do it right before serving). It will bring out the flavors in a great way.

Do you love caramel? What's your favorite caramel treat? Share in the comments!
