More About This Recipe

  • Happy Bastille Day everyone! Are you celebrating this French holiday on July 14th? Perhaps reenacting a storming of the Bastille? I think Marie Antoinette would agree that any proper festivities would include a pastry component, because as she famously said, “let them eat cake. . . “ When I heard of “white cake” flavored vodka, I nearly went mad with the possibilities. Cake in a glass? I suppose technically the Strawberry Shortcake Martini would be drinking cake, or imbibing something cake-inspired, or enjoying a cake-like liquid refreshment that could conceivably take the place of actual cake. Any way you “slice” it (sorry, pun intended, could not resist!); you’ll love the Strawberry Shortcake Martini. Its sweet, but not syrupy or over the top – and the taste is astonishingly cake-like! Even my husband (a martini man who typically eschews pink drinks) was an enthusiastic partaker. The recipe for this martini is very simple. Just muddle fresh strawberries (or crush with the back of a spoon) with the vodka, add the lemonade, amaretto, and ice to a cocktail shaker and proceed to shake. The amaretto adds just a touch of cake flavor (if you are using vanilla vodka instead of the cake flavored, you might want to use just a touch more of the amaretto). Hope you enjoy this Bastille Day “cake in a cocktail glass”!
