    Ingredients

    • 4 large Granny Smith apples
    • 1 (21 ounce) can apple pie filling
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1 (14.1 ounce) package Pillsbury rolled pie crust (use just 1 of the 2 crusts in the box)

    Directions

    1. 1Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
    2. 2Slice the top off each of your apples and scoop out the inside of the apple. I used a knife and a spoon to hollow out the apple.
    3. 3In a small bowl, mix the apple pie filling with the cinnamon. Spoon the filling into the well of each apple.
    4. 4Unroll one pie crust and cut it into fourths; one for each apple. Then cut each quarter into 1/4-inch strips.
    5. 5Lay strips of the dough on top of the apple. Then take one new strip at a time and alternate weaving it over and under the pie strips already in place. Repeat until the top of the apple has been covered. Trim excess pie crust around the edges with a knife.
    6. 6Place apples in a baking dish and fill with 1/4-inch of water. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until crust if golden brown. Remove from baking dish and enjoy.

You cam make your own filling using 2 additional apples, 1/4 cup of sugar, 1 - 2 TBSP brown sugar and 1/4tsp of cinnamon. I tried it this way at home. It will take extra baking time though to ensure the fresh apples cook through. Bake covered in foil for 25 minutes, uncover and bake for another 20 minutes.

Ah man! I'm home from the store, it's pouring out, and I've planned to make these *without* realizing it called for a can full of apple pie filling!?! Has anyone made their own filling with the insides of the apples plus some? I'm thinking of stewing a couple extra apples' worth with brown sugar and cinnamon as I usually do for stewed apples (no water added, just small saucepan, brown sugar and cinnamon, lid and low heat for until they're done :-) Yeah, I know, I'm so exacting. Anyway, gonna do it because going back out for a tin of "stuff" just ain't gonna happen. Will report back.

@Anonymous, You could definitely use the apple from inside and add some spices and some sugar to make your own filling.

@rmcole2012, You could definitely use juice but since it's just on the outside of the apple, I don't think it matters or changes the flavor.

@Anonymous, Apple Pie filling can be found by the canned fruit in your grocery store.

can you use apple juice instead of water? i love water but it seems like it would be better with juice.
