Tips & Techniques

  • High Altitude (3500-6500 ft):

Very finely chop apples if using firm ones.

  • Substitution

You can use turkey sausage as a substitute for the pork sausage.

  • Family Fun

If the timing is right, plan a trip to a nearby apple orchard with your family. Not only is it a great way to spend time together, but your kids will get a lesson in where and how apples are grown.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2  lb bulk pork sausage
  • 1  can (21 oz) apple pie filling with more fruit
  • 2  medium apples, peeled, chopped (about 2 cups)
  • 2  cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese (8 oz)
  • 1 1/2  cups Original Bisquick® mix
  • 1 1/2  cups milk
  • 1/4  teaspoon salt
  • 1/8  teaspoon pepper
  • 6  eggs

Directions

  1. 1Heat oven to 375°F. Spray 13x9-inch (3-quart) glass baking dish with cooking spray.
  2. 2In 12-inch skillet, cook sausage over medium-high heat 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until no longer pink; drain. Stir in pie filling and apples. Spread mixture evenly in baking dish. Top with 1 cup of the cheese.
  3. 3In large bowl, stir Bisquick mix, milk, salt, pepper and eggs with wire whisk or fork until blended. Pour evenly over cheese.
  4. 4Bake 30 to 37 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out clean. Top with remaining 1 cup cheese. Bake 3 to 5 minutes longer or until cheese is melted. Let stand 5 minutes before serving.

This is a tasty Breakfast Bake with Apples, Fried Scrambled Sausage, & Cheddar Cheese. I am a little uncomfortable with there being no discussion of chopping the canned Apple Pie Filling, as the Raw Apples are being diced. The rest of the assembly in the 13" x 9" pan is very clear. The Bisquick gives you a delicious Crust - with Cheddar cheese baked upon the top the last 3 - 5 min. Then you only have to wait 5 min. more prior to serving. Putting the baked serving dish upon a heat protecting rack for the table, you will have a moment to decide just how to slice the dish into 12 portions". Use a good pie serving piece or a nice spatula to serve the portions. Enjoy!
