Let's play a game. It's called, "Did You Know?" Ready. Go.
- Did you know that avocados are actually fruit?
- Did you know avocados are also called "butter pears" for their buttery interiors and pear shapes, or "alligator pears" for their rough, green skins?
- Did you know that they can taste delicious in a sweet quick bread?
If you answered "yes" to all three questions, you are correct (and one smart cookie)! Now that we've played that funny little game, let's discuss this delicious Avocado Quick Bread.
A lot of people struggle with what to do with an avocado, including me. The obvious go-to recipe is guacamole, but some even slice them on top of a sandwich, chop them up in a salad or put them in soups. Being that I'm primarily a baker of bread, I just had to figure out a way to incorporate these buttery, green fruits into a loaf.
Avocados tend to pair well with sweeter foods, like cherry tomatoes, strawberries or oranges. But considering tomatoes, strawberries and oranges wouldn't do so well in a loaf of bread, I decided to go with ground cinnamon and cloves, giving the quick bread a dense, smooth and ever-so-slightly sweet taste. It was almost like summer and fall swirled together in a cakey tea bread. If that's not enough to whet your appetite, there's also a solid cup of sugar and one whole stick of butter in this recipe to sweeten the deal.
This quick bread is certainly best baked (and eaten) in moderation, but alongside a cup of ginger orange tea, it's the best thing since boring old banana bread.
