These make-ahead directions work best if you substitute an 8-inch square (2-quart) baking dish for the 1 1/2-quart casserole. Prepare recipe as directed above; do not bake. Cover with foil; freeze. When ready to use, do not thaw; bake, covered, at 350°F. for 1 1/2 hours. Uncover; bake an additional 10 minutes or until lightly browned and mixture is bubbly.

Ingredients

  • 8  oz. (3 1/2 cups) uncooked macaroni or bow tie pasta (farfalle)
  • 1/4  cup butter
  • 1  small garlic clove, minced
  • 1/4  cup all-purpose flour
  • 2  cups milk
  • 6  oz. (1 1/2 cups) shredded extra-sharp Cheddar cheese
  • 4  drops hot pepper sauce
  • 1  cup julienne-cut (1 1/2x1/4x1/4-inch) cooked ham

Directions

  1. 1Heat oven to 375°F. Spray 1 1/2-quart casserole with nonstick cooking spray.
  2. 2Cook pasta to desired doneness as directed on package. Drain; return to saucepan.
  3. 3Meanwhile, melt butter in medium saucepan over medium heat. Add garlic; cook 1 minute. With wire whisk, blend in flour; cook and stir 1 minute. Add milk; cook until mixture boils and thickens, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to low. Add cheese; stir until melted.
  4. 4Stir in hot pepper sauce. If desired, add salt and pepper to taste. Add ham; mix well. Add cheese sauce to cooked pasta; stir until well mixed. Spoon into sprayed casserole.
  5. 5Bake at 375°F. for 25 to 30 minutes or until lightly browned and bubbly.
