Looking for a super smart Halloween party idea (pun indended)! How about popcorn balls made to look like brains with a delectably creepy mashmallow-y base and painted on "blood'!

Ingredients

  • 1 bag (10.5 oz ) marshmallows
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 6 cups popcorn, popped (and lightly salted if you like - I do!)
  • Red food coloring
  • Paintbrush

Steps

  • 1
Melt the marshmallows and butter over very low heat, stirring occasionally, about 5 minutes.
  • 2
Remove marshmallow mixture from heat, add one drop red food coloring, stir. (You don't need to stir all the way - this adds to the brainy look of the finished popcorn balls!) Add to popcorn.
  • 3
With lightly oiled hands, shape the mixture into 8 popcorn balls.
  • 4
Paint on the blood as desired, with additional red food coloring. Or just drip it on for an extra bloody effect.

More About This Recipe

  • It’s that time of year again: autumn leaves, shorter days, and yes, creepy-themed treats are back again too! My favorite creepy treat has to be Brain Popcorn Balls. I’m a marshmallow fanatic, and mixed with the slightly salty popcorn, these are so utterly simple, but one of my favorites. To strike a Halloween pun, I think they are To Die For! Aside from the sweet/salty mojo, I love popcorn balls because they are super easy to make, and the recipe can be doubled, or quadrupled to infinity with no effect on the final product, should one need to produce in party-sized volume. Creepy, tasty, and brain-tastic!
