More About This Recipe

  • I’ve always found candied apples to be gorgeous to look at, a great conversation piece and a pretty table-topper. But do I really want to bite into a rock-hard apple on a stick? Is this an easy snack to eat? I think not. According to my husband, who has two fake front teeth from a sports injury, candy apples are his nemesis. That sticky coating will rip those fake teeth right out, and then we’ve got a serious problem and a large dental bill! I wanted to come up with a more practical spin on a candied apple, one that you can enjoy without fearing that your precious chompers might suffer. And so I present…Candy Apple Bites. To start, get yourself a bag of apples, chocolate chips, caramels and a plethora of toppings. The toppings can be whatever you like – get creative! I used sprinkles, coconut flakes, chocolate chips, cereal, nuts and more! Try using black and orange sprinkles if you’re going to serve them at your Halloween party. The sky's the limit for these bite-size treats. Using a double broiler, melt your chocolate and caramels. Start the caramels first, as they take a LONG time to melt. In the meantime, cut your apples into wedges.
  • *Trial and Error Trick: It’s hard to get your melted caramel and chocolate to stick to the apples, so put them in the freezer for about half an hour after they’ve been cut. Just before dipping, coat the apples in powdered sugar so the coatings have something dry to stick to. Line up your toppings in separate bowls, and start dipping! This is a GREAT activity to do with kids—just keep them away from the super-hot melted coatings and let them play with the toppings only. The kids will have a blast creating different combinations, and everyone can celebrate their hard work by devouring these treats! If you feel like making a traditional candy apple, simply put an apple on a stick, dip it in the coating of your choice and roll it in the toppings. Try making these candy apple varations with your kids, or make them yourself and serve them at your fall gathering for a unique dessert. They look so pretty lined up with various toppings and coatings. Here’s to unlimited combinations of apples, caramels, chocolate, sprinkles and much more!
