More About This Recipe

  • Casseroles aren’t always the most eye catching dishes, but they can be fancied up in just minutes with these quick and easy casserole toppings.

My favorite part of a casserole is always the layer of crunchiness on top. Here are a couple of simple casserole topping options for both sweet or savory casseroles.

    1) Cheesy Crunch Casserole Topping (featured)

This is a basic topping made with only three ingredients. Just slightly crush up some Wheaties, add a little melted butter and sharp cheddar cheese, and your casserole has gone from ordinary to extraordinary! This topping is super versatile and can be used for potato, chicken or veggie casseroles.

    2) Parmesan Garlic Crumb Casserole Topping

Who knew you could eat a bowl of Cheerios for breakfast and then use it as a casserole topping for dinner that night? Grind up some Cheerios in a food processor to a fine crumb consistency. Add some melted butter, garlic, and Parmesan and you have a delectable crumb topping that, dare I say … smells like popcorn when you bake it? I like to use this one to top saucy chicken casseroles.

    3) Bacon and Cheese Casserole Crunch Topping

This topping is great for breakfast casseroles. Take your egg casseroles up a notch with some crispy bacon, cheese, and Wheat Chex cereal for some added fiber. It’s kind of like eating your eggs and cereal all at one time.

    4) Coconut Caramel Casserole Crunch

Not all casseroles have to be savory. Fiber One Caramel Delight cereal is a treat in itself … but adding some coconut, butter, and chopped pecans to it as a topping makes any dessert casserole out of this world. The coconut gets toasted to perfection in the oven. Watch out because I could definitely just scrape this off the top and eat it with a spoon. This topping is great for dessert, fruit, squash, or sweet potato casseroles.

    5) Garlic Swiss Crunch Topping

Swiss cheese pairs perfectly with veggies, so this topping is a perfect compliment to green bean or broccoli casseroles. A little garlic and Swiss cheese is tossed together with crushed Total cereal and sprinkled on top for a cheesy crunch.

Any of these casserole toppings are guaranteed to take your casseroles from blah to wow!
