Tips & Techniques

  • Kitchen Tips

Candy coating is designed to be easier to work with than chocolate - to melt smoothly for dipping and to dry hard and glossy. Melt candy coating over low heat to prevent it from scorching and hardening. Use a paring knife to cut the tiny pretzel twists into three curved pieces. Use the remaining center pieces for the antennae.

  • Microwave Option

To melt candy coating in the microwave, follow the directions printed on the package.

  • High Altitude (3500-6500 ft):

    No change.

Ingredients

  • 12  oz. chocolate-flavored candy coating, cut into pieces
  • 1  (1-lb.) pkg. peanut butter-filled sandwich cookies
  • 64  tiny pretzel twists
  • 4  teaspoons miniature candy-coated chocolate pieces

Directions

  1. 1Line cookie sheets with waxed paper. Melt candy coating in small saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly until smooth.
  2. 2For each cookie bug, hold 1 cookie with tongs; dip entire top and sides of cookie in melted coating, letting excess drip off. Place cookie, coated side up, on waxed paper-lined cookie sheets.
  3. 3Cut pretzels into curved pieces for legs. Dip 1 end of each leg piece in coating; place 3 legs on each side of each cookie.
  4. 4Cut 2 short pretzel pieces for antennae. Dip 1 end of each antennae piece in coating; place on top of cookie. Place chocolate pieces near antennae for eyes. If desired, decorate bugs with additional candies. Let stand about 10 minutes or until coating is set before storing.

On my arlier note i misspelled 'weather' for teaching kids about Nature. Use peanut shapped cookies. Melt either milk chocolate or dark, dip the entire cookie and try to let it set upwith which ever side looks best. Get your youngest assistant to take the bowl of 'mini-M-&-Ms' , he or she will need to separat the tiny candies into matching pairs of colors. The Critter's will not look like they are 'real' unless they have a matching pair of eyes! Do not let the tiny pretzles sit in a bowl, not matching in length. Any and all problems can be served. Keep your eyes upon the photo above. Do not hesitate to work upon the creations a few at a time. The success of the group of critters, will make the time of construction well worth while! Enjoy!!!

What a great treat when teaching 6 - 10 year olds in a wheather course. Taking upon a small hike to discover nature samples - leaves, nuts, berries, flowers, insects. Upon any season these 'cookie bugs' will stir up an interest in studying Nature!
