    Member recipe

This recipe was submitted by a member and has not been tested in our kitchen.

    Ingredients

    • 1 3/4 cups prepared lemonade
    • 4 envelopes plain gelatin
    • 1 1/4 cups cake flavored vodka (or substitute vanilla or whipped cream vodka and a touch of amaretto)
    • 2 tsp sweetened condensed milk (up to 4 tbsp is okay -- use to sweeten to taste!)
    • 6 small bowls (one for each color)
    • liquid food color
    • frosting and sprinkles, for garnish, if desired
    • flexible silicone mini muffin pan

    Directions

    1. 1Pour lemonade into a small saucepan, and sprinkle with gelatin. Allow to soak for a minute or two.
    2. 2Heat over low, stirring constantly, until the gelatin is dissolved (about 5 minutes).
    3. 3Remove from heat, stir in the vodka and sweetened condensed milk.
    4. 4Pour 1/2 cup portions into 6 bowls. Use liquid food color for rainbow colors (in this case: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet). (I wanted a very vibrant rainbow, so I used 4 drops of liquid food coloring for the red, yellow, green and blue colors. To get orange, use 3 drops red and 1 drop yellow. To get violet, use 2 drops red and 2 drops blue.)
    5. 5Prepare the mini muffin pans by spraying lightly with cooking spray and then wiping clean with a paper towel. (This will leave a slight residue, which will assist in unmolding without affecting the taste or appearance of the jelly shots.)
    6. 6Spoon 3/4 teaspoon of the red gelatin mixture into the muffin pan cavities. Refrigerate until set, but still sticky when touched. (The first layer will take 10 minutes or so, subsequent layers less, about 5 minutes each.) Repeat with remaining colors.
    7. 7Refrigerate overnight to allow the layers to fully bond.
    8. 8To serve, loosen around the edges of each muffin cavity and pop out the jelly shots.
    9. 9Immediately before serving, garnish with a small dollop of frosting and sprinkles.
    10. 10Can't find a silicone pan? Wax-lined paper cups also work for this recipe. Just refrigerate until firm and when ready to eat, loosen by gently squeezing the cup, then simply peel away the paper cup.

Plastic shot glasses or a metal pan are great to use, just be sure to spray and wipe like you would do if you were using the silicone pan.

You can use vanilla syrup and a few drops of armaretto creamer to replace to vodka and it comes out perfect, smells like cake and still taste like cake. Everyone really loved them. Great idea!

Worked great following the instructions, I used the 4 tbsps of condensed milk. Only note, if you use a metal pan the layers set noticeably quicker, so you might want to only allow for 3 minutes between layers or else they will separate when you serve them. Great recipe, thank you guys!

Experimentation with that ingredient is definitely welcome, @Anonymous — the condensed milk is meant to help sweeten the taste of each shot. We suggest potentially trying a different mold next time to see if that has an effect on how the shots set. Glad you continue to enjoy this recipe!

I'm curious if, regarding condensed milk, "you can use up to 4 tbsp" should read "up to 4 tsp"? I've used a couple tbsp the last couple times I've made this recipe and the shots will not set... all other measurements were exactly as listed. This is the only thing I adjusted from the first time I made them when they did work...

Hi! Some experimentation would need to be done, but generally, it's a good idea to stick with the 1 1/4 cups vodka so that the shots will definitely set. Good luck, and be sure to let us know if you decide to experiment with this recipe! :)

we used lemon flavored jello rather than tasteless and they turned out delicious! they tasted like lemon cream cake. we used frozen cool whip as the icing. for people who want them to be alcoholic but dont like unmixed drinks or really strong shots, i recommend this because we used a lot more vodka than the recipe called for but they still didnt have that alcohol burn flavor

So, what this recipe doesn't tell you is that while you are waiting for each layer to mold the other gelatin begins to congeal. Don't panic, just simply re heat as you go, in the microwave for about 20 seconds

If you use fruit punch or any other juice, it should be a suitable substitute to the lemonade, as the lemonade is just a flavoring device. Most jello shots do not require lemonade.

I used four tablespoons of the condensed milk wich made them sweet, also used a metal mini muffin pan and the shots came out easily. I found the metal helped them set up much quicker about five minutes per layer. I also found that was better to mix each color as the layer before was setting, helped with the jello not setting in the bowls. When making the frosting I added some of the vodka to it..was worth the work.

Hi Everyone, massive huge gigantic apologies to all. I forgot to an ingredient in the list - the sweetened condensed milk which adds a touch of opacity, and also sweetness. As far as making the jelly shots without alcohol, I think TbspErin has the best idea I've heard - sub in water and a little almond extract for the vodka. Hard to substitute for the cake flavored vodka! Again, apologies to all for the inconvenience, and feel free to beat me up a little. I can take a few lumps! XO Michelle

To make this recipe vodka free (non-alcoholic) you can sub in the water for the alcohol. I'm not totally sure how you'd keep the cake flavor, but I'd try perhaps a little almond extract in the water to give it a little bit of a cake taste.
