first of all for those of you suggesring to add bitter, this is an "icing" recipe. icing does not contain fat solids. You are thinking of frosting. An icing is intended to be a thin layer of "icing" that traditionally hardens. Frosting is intended to be fluffy and soft. This is a great icing recipe, spread thin and let dry.

Great frosting that hardens on cookies. You can also use colorful juices if you don't want to use food coloring. I just use a small amount of liquid and add icing sugar until it's pretty gooey and hard to mix. Works every time!

Me sure to use vanilla EXTRACT, not vanilla flavoring. There is a BIG difference. The extract helps eliminate the dead sweetness of the sugar.

I don't have milk, so I used heavy cream instead. I didn't measure the cream, but as a rule, I start with less liquid than a recipe calls for, then add gradually. I started with a thick icing to pipe an edge. I added more cream to thin/flood. This is great for sugar cookies; I'm confident that it would be great with milk (sorry for commenting on a modified, not exact, recipe). Anything with so much sugar is going to be sweet.....it's icing. :-) I'm keeping this recipe. Thank you!

That's a great question, @Anonymous, and it's def a tough skill to master. Part of it may be the utensils you're using to ice/frost your desserts (I would suggest a frosting spatula). Another factor could be the temperature of your cookies/cakes at the time of frosting — a little patience goes a long way when cooling. For tips on when to use what type of icing/frosting for cakes, click here: http://taste-for-adventure.tablespoon.com/2012/01/07/types-of-frosting-that-take-the-cake/.

I Know there are people who dont normally do icings and cookies and cakes, but common knowledge sugest that you only use fine sugar for icing. hence the sugar called icing sugar. add a small amount of butter, and dont add all the milk at once. put the icing sugar and butter and vanilla in the electric mixer and start micing, than slowly add milk untill you get the correct consistency. also the longer you beat it, the fluffier it will become. i always add different colours icing, and different extracts for flavouring.

it turned out grainy and mushy.but then i realized that i used brown, bulky sugar instead of the sugar on the recipe, so if u want to make this, then use that exact sugar because if not, it'll turn out horribly! But i also strongly suggest using a bit more milk, because if not it its too much sugar. It tasted ok. Not amazing. I rated it three and a half stars

If this covers 6 dozen cookies, they must be the size of quarters. Also, it was way too thin, so we ended up adding about 1/4 cup more sugar, and some food coloring to mask the vanilla color. If you don't need a lot, just start with less liquid.

I just tried this recipe and it was very sweet but I added 1/4 tsp almond extract and it changed the flavor for the better. I had to add a 1/4 cup more of powdered sugar to get it to the consistency I wanted but it dried hard like it should. And when its dry you can't see the spread marks. I'll try adding different flavor extracts next time.

People who can not follow directions should not cook. Check your vanilla, you know it does expire or maybe you need lessons on how to use a measuring spoon. ha! ha! Just because it didn't work for you don't mean you have to comment on it. Is it possible that the problem might be your lack of skill. A child could make this recipe.

This recipe is for icing that will get hard so you can stack the cookies. If you want to use decorating tips, don't put in too much milk. Add more milk to spread easily. A little goes a long way. If using liquid food coloring, it will thin icing depending on how much you put in. Have to treat that just as if it were the milk. If you don't want this to get hard, then use corn syrup instead of milk.

It was wonderful! Saved me from going to the store! Although, i would add a bit more milk, made it really thick. Besides that, it's a wonderful icing recipe!

this icing is the perfect icing for sugar cookies. for those of you complaining about consistency obviously lack basic baking knowledge and shouldnt blame the recipe. the ingredients alobe show that it will be liquidy

People are xxxxxxxx. Of COURSE it's going to be too sweet if you use it like cake icing. This is more like a glaze... a little goes a long way. This is /exactly/ like my grandma used to put on her cupcakes, which is why it tasted fantastic on the batch I just made. =-]

Maybe I did something wrong....all I could taste was the powder sugar, which has a very odd flavor.

I tried doubling it and it was way to think there was not enough liquid so I had to keep adding more and more milk!! And it is still really thick.

I'm going to try it now, perhaps it was too thin for some because they put too much milk in it? Anyway, wish me luck!

this is great for a light frosting on thin sugar cookies (I acutally used this the other week). However if you think its going to look like the picture IT WON'T! So that you don't "flood" the cookie you have to use a little bit and spread it around. This little bit will frost about 50 cookies

You can add a small amount of flour or corn starch to thicken it up a bit

Tasted great but way to thin as cookie icing unless you just want to flood your cookies...we were wanting to actually decorate and it was a total fail.
