    Ingredients

    • 1 cup flour
    • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
    • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
    • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
    • 1/8 teaspoon allspice
    • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar, divided
    • 1 large egg
    • 1/4 cup applesauce
    • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
    • 3 tablespoons whole milk, divided
    • 2 tablespoons cold butter
    • 1/2 cup powdered sugar

    Directions

    1. 1Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and grease the donut pan.
    2. 2In a large bowl combine baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, allspice, cloves, salt, and ¼ cup of brown sugar.
    3. 3To the dry ingredients add egg, applesauce, maple syrup, 2 tablespoons of milk, and melted better.
    4. 4Once ingredients are thoroughly combined scoop the batter into a large piping bag with a round tip. If you don’t have a large piping bag you could use a plastic bag and just cut off one of the ends.
    5. 5Pipe the batter into round circles in the donut pan. The batter should fill about ½ of the donut cavity in the pan.
    6. 6Bake the donuts for about 8 minutes or until golden brown.
    7. 7To make the icing combine the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter with the remaining ¼ cup of brown sugar and bring to a boil. Watch this part of the icing process carefully because you don’t want the sugar to burn.
    8. 8Continue to boil for 2 minutes and then add 1 tablespoon of milk and bring to a boil again.
    9. 9Once the mixture is boiling stir in the powdered sugar. The mixture should now look like foamy-bubbly caramel.
    10. 10Remove the mixture from the heat and dip the top of the donuts into the icing and set on a rack to dry.
