Slip into weekend mode with this hearty, egg-topped French toast bake. It's delicious, filling and deceptively easy to make!

Ingredients

1
medium loaf baguette French bread, cut into 1 1/2-inch thick slices
1/2
lb sliced deli ham
4
oz Cheddar cheese, sliced
7
eggs
2/3
cup milk
1
teaspoon salt
1/2
teaspoon pepper
Maple syrup, if desired

Directions

  • 1 Heat oven to 350°F. Spray 13x9-inch (3-quart) baking dish with cooking spray.
  • 2 Cut a slit in each slice of bread almost all the way through, leaving the bottom connected. Stuff each slit with slices of ham and cheese.
  • 3 In medium bowl, beat 3 of the eggs with the milk, salt and pepper, using whisk. Pour into baking dish. Place the stuffed bread in baking dish; let stand 15 minutes.
  • 4 Turn the bread over, and top with more cheese. Bake 20 to 25 minutes.
  • 5 Set oven control to broil. Broil with tops of toast 3 to 5 inches from heat 2 to 3 minutes or until tops are golden brown.
  • 6 Fry remaining eggs in a skillet to desired doneness, and serve on top of French toast with maple syrup.
Tips

This recipe can easily be scaled up or down, depending on the number of people you need to serve.

If desired, this recipe can also be prepared on the stovetop. Dip the stuffed bread into the egg mixture, and then fry in a greased skillet over medium-high heat, 3 to 4 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Top with more cheese and a fried egg just before serving.
