    Ingredients

    • 1 cup white sugar
    • 1 tablespoon root beer extract
    • Baker’s yeast (such as Fleischmann’s)
    • Cold water
    • 2 liter plastic bottle (don’t forget the cap!)
    • Large funnel

    Directions

    1. 1When making root beer at home, it’s important to follow these steps in sequence.
    2. 2Place plastic bottle on sturdy surface.
    3. 3Place funnel in plastic bottle.
    4. 4Add 1 cup of sugar.
    5. 5Add ¼ teaspoon of baker’s yeast.
    6. 6Shake well to mix the yeast and sugar (don't forget to put the cap on!)
    7. 7When you’re done shaking, take the cap off, hold the bottle upright and swirl slowly to bring the yeast/sugar mixture back to the bottom.
    8. 8Place funnel back in and add 1 tablespoon of root beer extract.
    9. 9Fill the bottle just half way with cold water.
    10. 10Swirl the bottle again to mix the root beer extract and water with other ingredients.
    11. 11Place funnel back in and add cold water (just about an inch shy of full).
    12. 12Place cap on and shake gently until ingredients are dissolved.
    13. 13Place your root beer mixture on a shelf at room temperature—not cold, not hot.
    14. 14Let the root beer ferment for three or four days—you’ll know when it’s done if the bottle feels hard when you squeeze it. Make sure you check the bottle for hardness regularly.
    15. 15When the bottle feels hard, place your root beer in the refrigerator to cool overnight.
    16. 16Get out the ice cubes (or ice cream), serve, and enjoy!
