Ingredients

  • 1 medium onion
  • 1 small hot pepper
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup small red lentils
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon coriander
  • 1/8 teaspoon cardamom
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • water

Steps

  • 1
Cut up onion, garlic, and as much hot pepper as you would like.
  • 2
Place all of them in a pot and pour in enough vegetable oil (1/2 cup) so the ingredients swim in it.
  • 3
Let this simmer for about 5 minutes.
  • 4
wash lentils and add into mixture.
  • 5
Add remaining spices and add enough water so that the lentils are covered. You will need to add water as it cooks down until it reaches a consistency you like. The less water, the more firm the lentils - the more water, the more soupy.
  • 6
Stir very often so lentils do not burn, approximately every 5-10 minutes.
