Ingredients

  • 2 orange wedges
  • 4 or 5 Maraschino cherries
  • A few dashes of bitters
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (less or no sugar if you prefer a less sweet drink)
  • 2 oz whiskey
  • Orange slice (for garnish)

Steps

  • 1
In a lowball glass, add the orange wedges and cherries. Add the bitters.
  • 2
Using a bar spoon or muddler, mash the fruit into a pulp. This release its sugars and ensures the juices will blend better with the whiskey.
  • 3
Add the sugar and place ice into the glass.
  • 4
Measure out two ounces whiskey and pour it into the glass. You'll notice that that this doesn't fill the entire glass, which is fine. This is a strong drink that's meant to be sipped.
  • 5
Stir the drink with the bar spoon (or any other spoon) so that the fruit and sugar move throughout the liquid.
  • 6
Garnish with an orang slice and serve!

More About This Recipe

  • What may have started as an attempt to sweeten up some harsh whiskey has turned into a great introduction drink to the world of brown cocktails. The sugar from the fruits (and the spoonful that you’ll add) balances the potency of the spirit nicely. You can build the drink directly in a lowball glass (which is sometimes known as an old fashioned glass due to the drink’s popularity). Garnish with an orange slice and enjoy.
