Ingredients

  • 2 sticks (1 cup) butter, softened
  • 1 (2 pound) bag powdered sugar
  • 1/4-1/3 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla

Steps

  • 1
In a large bowl or stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, beat together all ingredients on low until incorporated.
  • 2
Raise speed to medium-high, beating until light and fluffy. Add milk by the tablespoons, if a softer texture is desired.

Expert Tips

  • tip 1
We recommend tinting frosting with gel food coloring, rather than liquid food coloring, since by using liquid you’ll be adding more liquid, which will change the consistency of the buttercream frosting.
  • tip 2
Want to know how to make any color of frosting ever? We have a formula for that.
