    Ingredients

    • 1 1/2  lb. sweet Italian sausage or ground beef
    • 1  cup chopped onions
    • 2  garlic cloves, minced, or 1 teaspoon chopped garlic in oil
    • 2  (15-oz.) cans tomato sauce
    • 2  (14 1/2-oz.) cans Italian-style stewed tomatoes
    • 1  tablespoon brown sugar
    • 1  teaspoon dried oregano leaves, crushed
    • 1  teaspoon dried basil leaves, crushed
    • 1/2  teaspoon fennel seed
    • 1/8  teaspoon cayenne pepper, if desired

    Directions

    1. 1If sausage comes in casing, remove casing; break up sausage. In 4-quart saucepan or Dutch oven, brown sausage, onions and garlic; drain. Stir in remaining ingredients; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low; simmer 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Serve over hot cooked pasta.
