    Ingredients

    • Brownie base
    • 1 box Betty Crocker® SuperMoist® German chocolate cake mix
    • 1  bottle red food coloring (1 oz)
    • 1 stick butter, melted
    • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
    • 1  egg
    • Cheesecake Topping
    • 1 8 oz package cream cheese
    • 1/4 cup sugar
    • 1  egg
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract

    Directions

    1. 1Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
    2. 2Stir the cake mix, food coloring, melted butter, oil and 1 egg together. Mixture will be very thick. Pat into a greased 9" x 13" pan, reserving 1/3 cup of batter.
    3. 3Prepare the cheesecake filling. Beat the cream cheese, egg, sugar and vanilla with a whisk or with an electric mixer, until fluffy.
    4. 4Pour the cheesecake into the pan, on top of the brownie mixture.
    5. 5Add a tablespoon or so of water to the reserved brownie batter, and stir well. The texture should be like thick cake batter. Dot the batter onto the cheesecake layer, and swirl with a knife.
    6. 6Bake for about 30 minutes, until the cheesecake is set, and just barely starting to brown around the edges.
    7. 7Allow to cool fully before cutting.

Since this recipe involves both a red velvet cake and cheesecake, the combined mixture will be very thick, @Anonymous. If you decide to try again, I recommend experimenting by stirring/beating the batters at longer intervals. Hope that helps. :)

My cream cheese was not quite room temp, but when I add the other ingrediants and used a hand mixer it turned out just fine

I'm sad :( I wanted so badly to make these pretty treats but I didn't know the cream cheese needed to be room temp or it would be lumpy :(

Hi! A stick of butter is equivalent to 8 Tbsp or 1/2 cup.

How much is a 'stick of butter' Butter doesn't come in sticks where I live and I wouldn't want to use too much or too little. Thanks.

Hi Anon - You can use any cake mix. We just <3 Pillsbury and Betty Crocker mixes.

The key to cutting brownies is a plastic knife! Works great with the cheesecake top as well. Just make sure the brownies have cooled. This recipe is delish! I used a red velvet cake mix instead. Worked perfectly.

Hi @MusicDecay - Try using a hot knife to cut the cheesecake. To do this, dip your knife in a bowl of hot water, wipe dry and slice away. Dip and dry before/after each slice.

Made last night for work! The only thing I'm not so sure how to do, is cut it without it sticking to the knife and ruining the look :( I've looked up a few methods this morning before leaving, but I find "how to cut cheesecake" with floss. But that is a little hard when I am trying to leave it in the baking pan, not take it out. Otherwise, I'm sure that might work slightly better. Haha. Any suggestions? It still tastes amazing though! Possibly better than the last time I baked it!

I've made these. They turn out amazing. Just use red velvet cake instead of bothering with the food coloring.

I just made this tonight. It didn't turn out red at all. The recipie didn't mention how much food coloring was supposed to be put in this. It just says 1 bottle of food coloring and i'm assuming you're not supposed to put the entire bottle in. I didn't want to mess with anything so I didn't put that much in. It tastes ok. Not great, but its ok. I followed most of this recipe to the letter but I felt as though I didn't make enough of the cheesecake mix. Maybe it was my issue, idk.

I cannot wait to try this ... I can already see that I will add some almond extract as well as the vanilla to the brownie base ~~ as I almost ALWAYS have a red velvet cake mix around and even with that I add red food coloring ~~ but when I bake anything with a mix I always add some vanilla and almond extract. A little bit of almond goes a long way ... but the other thing I want to add to the brownie part is toasted walnuts. I am excited and will report back with the results!
