Tips & Techniques

  • (Total time will vary with appliance and setting.)

  • Success

A slow cooker that’s opened doesn’t cook, so don’t peek! Removing the cover allows heat to escape and adds 15 to 20 minutes to cooking time.

  • Time-Saver

Save time on cleanup when you spray the inside of the slow cooker with cooking spray before adding ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 1  bag (16 ounces) frozen hash brown potatoes, thawed (4 cups)
  • 1  can (15.25 ounces) Green Giant® whole kernel corn, undrained
  • 1  can (14.75 ounces) Green Giant® cream-style corn
  • 1  can (12 ounces) evaporated milk
  • 1  medium onion, chopped (1/2 cup)
  • 8  slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
  • 1/2  teaspoon salt
  • 1/2  teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4  teaspoon pepper

Directions

  1. 1In 3- to 4-quart slow cooker, mix all ingredients.
  2. 2Cover; cook on Low heat setting 6 to 8 hours (or High heat setting 3 to 4 hours) to develop flavors. Note: This recipe was tested in slow cookers with heating elements in the side and bottom of the cooker, not in cookers that stand only on a heated base. For slow cookers with just a heated base, follow the manufacturer’s directions for layering ingredients and choosing a temperature.

I gave this one star and would give zero if I could. This needs more liquid. I used the low setting on the pot and it burned onto the sides and was mush. Throwing the remainder of this out and will not make again.

Hi @Anonymous! Please note that the nutrition information is for one serving, or 1/6th of the total chowder made from the recipe.

Looks like nutrition information is wrong. Calories bound to be much higher than listed given the ingredients.

Aside from the one can of evaporated milk, recipe has no other liquid. I'm assuming broth of some kind must have been added. Anonymous

Anonymous #2: The bag of potatoes weighs 16 oz, it will contain approximately 4 cups (or 32 oz in volume) of potatoes.

Question: Receipe calls for 1 - 16 oz bag and then it says 4 cups. Wouldn't it be a 32 oz bag to make 4 cups?

Hi @Anonymous! The recipe calls for a 16-ounce bag of frozen hash brown potatoes, thawed. Though you can buy frozen potatoes both diced and shredded, it looks like the chef here used diced so I'd recommend using that type. As a result, if you'd rather use fresh potatoes, I'd go with four cups diced. Hope this helps!

Do you use shredded hash browns or diced? Could I simply five 4 cups of potatoes?

This came out really good. My husband used to eat the canned version of this growing up and for nostalgia's sake I thought I'd give this a try. It's way better than the canned variety :). I used turkey bacon instead of regular bacon to cut the fat down and I used soy sauce instead of worcestershire sauce, because it's what I had on hand. I added the hash brown potatoes, but I also added some diced potatoes in just to have some chunks in there. Everything else I did exactly the same. This is a fantastic low cost slow cooker weeknight meal for a family. I'll definitely be making this again several times in the cool season.

This soup is so easy to make and it tastes absolutely delicious!!! I have been making this version for several years (I found it in a slow-cooker cookbook that I own) and have had many requests for the recipe.
