    Ingredients

    • 2 Bags frozen spinach leaves (do not use fresh, frozen only!)
    • 1 Cup regular mayo (do not substitute!)
    • 1 Package Lipton or Knorr onion soup mix (powder)
    • 1 16 oz container sour cream
    • 2 Small cans water chestnuts (chopped or diced)
    • 3 Green onions (finely chopped)

    Directions

    1. 1Soak both packages of frozen spinach in warm water to defrost.
    2. 2Drain spinach well. Ring out spinach like a wet towel to squeeze out excess juice, with hands.
    3. 3Place spinach in a large bowl and mix in sour cream, onion soup packet, mayo, green onion and water chestnuts. You may add as much mayo and/or sour cream to satisfy your taste. Mix well.
    4. 4Cover and refrigerate overnight (or at least 2-4 hrs)
    5. 5Hollow out a large, round loaf of Hawaiian Bread (or Sourdough), leaving at least a 2 inch wall. Place bread bowl on tray and pour in the dip. (Place extra bread pieces around spinach bowl for easy to get, bite sized pieces to dip with.)
    6. 6Use another loaf of bread to tear more pieces with and place around bowl. (Try out different kinds of breads. My favorites are the sweet Hawaiian rolls and sourdough.)
    7. 7Serve & enjoy! =)

@GeorgeWashington1961, thank you for the other soup recipe with the Ground Beef! That sounds really good! I'm making this dip for a baby shower this weekend and will make your soup for Monday after Mothers Day.

forget about the onion soup mix. Use Knor creamy veg . what a difference than using Knorr veg, one tub of sour cream, and one cup of Helman's may. and chestnuts .

I use two boxes of frozen spinach, which are around 10oz each. Make sure that you suqeeze all water out of spinach or the dip is too watery. Our secret ingredient is a cup of shredded swiss cheese.

This has been my favorite recipe for 22 years! It's the one off the back of the knorrs packet if you get to the store and forget. Nothing else beats this spinach dip...I'm always disappointed at parties when this is not the recipe used.

I am 69 years old. I have made this dip using Knorr (which is not all powder - there are tiny dried vegetables through-out) since the mid 1950's. My Mom made a quick soup for our family one cold, wet winter's evening. The soup requires 4 cups of water to create it. Prior to adding the soup packet, she broke-up 1 lb. of very lean beef into the hot water. She let the meat cook roughly 5 min. Move the pan to a cooler location, for 1 min. She skimmed the water of any visible fat, then added the soup packet. She also added 1 can of condensed Campbell's Tomato Soup - she added it slowly to prevent splashing anything out of the hot mixture in the pan. Let the entire mixture cook 15 min. more, in-order-to meet the total of 20 min. cooking to totally re-hydrate the vegetable bits in the Knorr packet. If you need a min. or two more, it won't hurt the other ingredients! It is a tasty 1 bowl meal. We had some toast or crackers, but it was really filling! In later years, my own Son fell in love with both the soup and the dip! As he got older he made certain to fix the soup for himself and a friend or two. He belonged to several organizations, who periodically had gatherings and this was one of three dip recipes he varied making to take and share! The recipe for The Spinach Dip appeared on the side of the Knorr Box. Mom tasted it after I made a recipe for a meeting I was going to. That was when she added the recipe to her Recipe Box. We both agreed the chopped Water Chestnuts, and Green Onions simply added a deeper dimension to The Dip! It was a beloved recipe in our family!

Add a bag of shredded-3-cheese blend..or another cheese with a sharp bite.. it's knock your socks off popular at a party! Oh and make it a few hours in advance, let it sit in fridge for flavors to blend.. MmmmmmMMmm
