Ingredients

  • 1/4  cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4  cup shortening
  • 1/4  cup (1/2 stick) margarine or butter, softened
  • 1/2  teaspoon vanilla
  • 1  egg, separated
  • 1 cup cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4  teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • Nutella, Jelly, Peanut Butter, Chocolate Frosting

Directions

  1. Heat oven to 350º. Mix brown sugar, shortening, margarine, vanilla and egg yolk in medium bowl.

  2. Mix dry ingredients together. Stir flour mixture into sugar/egg mixture until dough holds together. Shape into 1-inch balls.

  3. Beat egg white slightly. Dip each ball into egg white; roll in nuts. Place about 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet; press thumb deeply into center of each. Bake about 10 minutes or until light brown and the cookies smell done. Immediately remove from cookie sheet. Cool completely on wire rack.

  4. Spoon different fillings into thumbprints. Mix up the colors to create reds, purple with grape jelly, and browns.
