Fun to serve, this upside-down pie is a classic from the third Bake-Off® Contest in 1951.

Ingredients

1/4
cup packed brown sugar
1
tablespoon butter or margarine, melted
1
tablespoon corn syrup
1/4
cup pecan halves
1
package (15 ounces) refrigerated pie crusts
2/3
cup granulated sugar
2
tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/2
teaspoon ground cinnamon
4
cups sliced peeled apples
Whipped cream, if desired

Directions

  • 1 Mix brown sugar, butter and corn syrup in 9-inch pie pan; spread evenly. Top with pecans. Prepare pie crusts for two-crust pie; place bottom crust over mixture in pan.
  • 2 Heat oven to 425°F. Mix granulated sugar, flour and cinnamon in small bowl. Arrange half of the apple slices in crust-lined pan. Sprinkle with half of the sugar mixture. Repeat with remaining apple slices and sugar mixture. Top with second crust; seal edges and flute. Cut slits in several places in top crust.
  • 3 Place pan on foil or cookie sheet during baking to catch any spills. Bake 8 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 325°F. Bake 25 to 35 minutes longer or until apples are tender and crust is golden brown.
  • 4 Loosen edge of pie; carefully turn upside down onto serving plate. Serve warm or cool with whipped cream.
