Cereal, The Party Food of Champions!

Cereal is great for all kinds of dinner party and brunch recipes. Here are eight ways to put a little healthy (and delicious!) crunch in your next celebration.

Cereal. It’s more than just something to put milk on.


I find myself using the cold breakfast standard more and more for all kinds of awesome dinner party and brunch recipes. Here are eight favorite ways to put a little healthy (and delicious!) crunch into your next celebration.


1) Ice Cream Topping


Offer your party guests a few different cereals to pour over ice cream or frozen yogurt for a healthier party treat.  This is a great way to squeeze some vitamins in with your dessert without taking away all the fun! Some of my favorites for topping ice cream are Golden Grahams and Cocoa Puffs.


2) Cake or Cupcake Decorating


Use cereal to spell out a message on a cake or cupcakes. This is much easier than trying to use a piping bag, and perfect for anyone with questionable handwriting. Or consider covering an entire surface with a colorful cereal, such as Trix, for a playful cake.


3) Yogurt Parfait


Set up a yogurt parfait bar at your next brunch. Offer yogurt, a granola such as Cascadian Farms French Vanilla Almond, assorted berries and some chocolate chips. Let guests build their own parfaits just the way they like them in pretty dessert cups.


4) Snack Mix


The king in this category is Chex Mix. It’s a staple at the holidays, but I think it’s good any time of the year. And other cereals can be incorporated into snack mixes too: Cheerios, Kix, etc.


5) Muffin Topping


I like to use crushed Cinnamon Toast Crunch on top of muffins. It’s especially tasty on apple or pumpkin muffins.


6) Coating for Chicken


Crushed Fiber One or Wheaties cereal is a perfect way to make a healthy, crunchy coating on chicken breasts.  Baked up and seasoned, they almost taste like they were fried.


7) Topping for Brunch Casseroles


One of my favorite casseroles is a potato dish called Happy Potatoes. It’s made by combining 2 pounds hash browns, 1 can cream of chicken soup, 2 cups sour cream, 2 cups grated cheddar cheese, and 2 tablespoons dried onion.  Top with 2 cups Corn Flakes or Total cereal and ½ cup melted butter. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 45 minutes, or until crisp on top. It’s to die for, trust me.


8. Salad topping


Grape Nuts cereal over a green salad with flavorful, tangy vinaigrette is delicious! They maintain their crunch but the mild flavor doesn’t compete with a really good salad dressing.
