Turn up the style of your next sit-down dinner party by incorporating edible place cards into your table design.

A little creativity can go a long way in taking your table beyond the expected.  Nix the traditional (read: boring) tented paper cards!  Edible elements coordinated to your table’s colors and style will step up your dinner party to the next level.

Functional Fruit

Use firm fruits or veggies to hold your paper place cards.  Cut a small slit in the top of the fruit or vegetable with a paring knife and slide a paper card in place.  Choose an appropriate fruit to match your dinner.  Consider apples, pears, or bell peppers in their various colors.

Or put each guest’s name on a fruit with a thick peel.  Use a permanent marker to write names, or use stickers.  Try lemons, oranges, grapefruit or even a banana.  If you have trouble with round fruits rolling around the plate, use a sharp knife to cut a small, flat surface on the bottom.

Sweet Treat

A sweet surprise your guests will love: personalized goodies marking each plate.  Purchase or make flat iced cookies or brownies (Betty Crocker sugar cookie or brownie mix makes this super easy) and use a piping bag to write a guest’s name on each one with additional icing in colors to match your table.  Consider placing goodies inside glassine bags so guests can save them for later.  Not confident in your icing handwriting?  Pick up your items from a local bakery, and enlist their help.

Lil’ Peep Seats

Don’t forget about the kids’ table!  Alphabet cookies are a fun way to mark little guest’s places.  An added bonus is kiddos will have something to munch on while they wait for their meal.  Names too long to fit on kid-size plates?  No problem! Line the cookies up on the placemats above or below each plate. You can enlist your own child’s help in hunting specific letters out of the box of cookies, for some bonus alphabet practice.

Let’s get creative! Do you have any other suggestions for edible place cards?
