It's a little darker in color - brown even. It falls into that sought-after category of whole grains. It can be a little firmer and a little nuttier in taste, but it's essentially just like its lighter colored counterpart. What am I talking about? Wheat pasta, of course, which is an alternative to traditional pastas.
As I said, the taste and texture of wheat pasta can be a little nuttier and firmer - but that varies heavily between brands. Some taste just like the pasta you grew up with, others don't. The trick is to find one that you like. So, if you've tried one whole wheat pasta and weren't fond of it, give it another shot.
In my house, my kids will eat wheat pasta without complaint. They like it the same, and so do I. But my husband? He's harder to convince. But he'll still eat it too.
Now, what to do with it? Basically, if you have a favorite pasta recipe and a favorite wheat pasta, you can just use the wheat pasta like any other pasta. Personally, I like wheat pasta best in really bold dishes since it balances the bolder flavor of the pasta.
Something like Penne with Spicy Sauce could be a great recipe for trading wheat penne pasta into. I love using wheat pasta with Chicken Cacciatore as well. I also like the sound of Chili Spaghetti.
