Making a big batch of tiny burger sliders can be fussy. It’s way easier to make one giant sandwich and slice it up for your crowd. This one—with hearty ground beef, melty Swiss cheese and caramelized onions—serves up to 12 people, so it’s just right for a pack of hungry football fans. Snack on one or two as an appetizer, or double up your portion and make it a meal. It’s the perfect appetizer for football season!

Ingredients

  • 1 bag (12 rolls) King’s Hawaiian™ Original Hawaiian Sweet Rolls
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 6 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 small yellow onion, sliced thin
  • Salt and pepper

Steps

  • 1
Slice sheet of Hawaiian sweet rolls in half horizontally. Leave rolls attached so you have a sheet of roll tops and a sheet of roll bottoms.
  • 2
Shape ground beef into a very thin rectangle that’s a bit larger than the rolls, and season with salt and pepper. On a griddle over medium-high heat, sear ground beef 4 minutes per side, until just cooked through.
  • 3
Meanwhile, add butter to griddle and cook onions until caramelized slightly.
  • 4
Remove onions and beef from griddle and reduce heat to low. Place the bottom half of the buns in the griddle, cut side up, and spread with mayo. Top with the ground beef patty. (If beef has shrunk substantially during cooking, break it into pieces so that each roll gets a small patty.) Add cheese slices and onions.
  • 5
Place top half of rolls over cheese and onions and cook patty melts for about 2 to 3 minutes per side until buns are browned and cheese is melted.
  • 6
Remove large patty melt from griddle and slice into 12 smaller sandwiches. Serve warm.

More About This Recipe

  • Hey, guess what?! It’s football season! And for me that means I need a big list of recipes that can serve a dual purpose. Maybe you need some hearty appetizers. Or maybe you want to make dinner out of it while you watch the game. Either way, these tiny patty melts are the perfect mix. Serve them as hearty party food or snag a few of them and call it a meal. The genius of this recipe is to cook the ground beef in a large (very thin) patty that’s the same shape as the sweet rolls. Then you can assemble the patty melts as one big rectangle and slice it up after it’s cooked. Much easier than cooking a bunch of tiny sliders! Besides the beef, I also like to cook some sliced onions in butter until they are slightly caramelized. Add that to the patty melts along with cheese (I like Swiss) and cook the whole thing on the griddle until the rolls are golden brown and the cheese is melted. What could be better?
