Slow-Simmered Spaghetti Meat Sauce

Ingredients

pound lean ground beef

pound bulk Italian pork sausage

medium carrots, finely chopped (1 cup)

medium green bell pepper, chopped (1 cup)

medium onion, chopped (1/2 cup)

cloves garlic, finely chopped

can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes, undrained

can (8 ounces) tomato sauce

can (6 ounces) tomato paste

tablespoon packed brown sugar

tablespoon dried Italian seasoning

ounces uncooked spaghetti
Shredded fresh Parmesan cheese, if desired

    Cook beef and sausage in 10-inch skillet over medium heat, stirring frequently, until beef is brown and sausage is no longer pink, about 8 minutes; drain.

    Mix beef mixture and remaining ingredients except spaghetti and Parmesan cheese in 3 1/2- to 4-quart slow cooker.

    Cover and cook on low heat setting 8 to 10 hours.

    About 20 minutes before serving, cook and drain spaghetti as directed on package. Serve sauce with hot cooked spaghetti and Parmesan cheese.

Expert Tips

A 1/2 pound of pork sausage can be used instead of the Italian sausage if it's more readily available. No fresh garlic? Use 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder or 1/2 teaspoon instant minced garlic instead.

For a meal in a snap, serve with purchased garlic bread and a buy-in-the-bag Caesar salad mix. A slice of store-bought cheesecake is the perfect dessert.
