On Saturday mornings revolves around one critical decision - waffles or pancakes?!
It’s a tough call - pancakes are fluffy and delicious, while waffles have the most perfect little square crevices to store your syrup.
But since it's National Waffle Day (and yes, there is totes such a thing), I decided to celebrate my love for waffles and give it a twist with a southern classic - chicken and waffles. If you’re not familiar with chicken and waffles and think it sounds uber weird, you’d be right. But the combo of savory fried chicken and fluffy waffles drizzled in sweet syrup is to die for.
I’m going to go a step further and completely shock you with Chicken and Waffle Sushi
. Say whaaat?!
Yes, I’m talking about Belgian waffles wrapped around a piece of fried chicken, doused with whipped cream and syrup. And you can use chopsticks. It doesn’t get much better than this.
Let's do this...
Using Bisquick, the absolute best all-purpose pancake/waffle mix on the planet, prepare per package directions. Heat up your Belgian waffle maker and get started making those waffles you love so dearly.
In the meantime, cook the popcorn chicken nuggets (found in the freezer aisle of any grocery store) and let cool.
Carefully cut the waffles into strips, about the width of one waffle square.
Gently wrap the waffle strip around a piece of chicken. To secure for presentation, you can fasten with a toothpick (warn your guests before eating!), and they will also stick together with a dab of whipped cream.
Drizzle syrup on your plate and place the sushi on top. Add a dollop of whipped cream and finish off with a healthy amount of syrup. Serve with chopsticks.
Is it breakfast? Is it an appetizer? Your call... all I know is that it’s most definitely awesome.
