How to Make Custom Fondant Cupcakes

Created March 8, 2017
Fondant Badge Cupcakes
Easy fondant cupcake toppers are a fun way to decorate cupcakes for celebrations, birthdays, holidays and social gatherings.

These festive cupcakes are a perfect way to celebrate a special occasion…like the bright and colorful newly, redesigned Tablespoon website!

Each little cake is topped with a fondant replica of the special new badges that you'll be seeing all around the site. If you love this idea, give it a try! Fondant Cupcake Toppers like these are easy to create for holidays, birthdays, or any event using cookie cutters and tools you can find around the kitchen.

You can use homemade or store bought fondant for this project. For the different colors, you can add paste food coloring to plain white fondant or just buy fondant in various colors. Before you begin to create the cupcake toppers, knead the fondant until it's pliable. Dust a cutting board and a rolling pin with cornstarch. Roll the fondant out to about 1/16 of an inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes. For the Tablespoon badges, I used alphabet cutters to create the badge titles like, "LOL" and "NOM U" and I used a round cutter to create a disco ball, and a knife to cut out a martini glass and an arrow.

Use a round cookie cutter that is similar in size to the top of your cupcakes to cut out fondant buttons. For a rainbow effect, roll various colors of fondant into logs then stick them together using water and flatten with a rolling pin. Brush a light coating of water on the backside of your cut outs and press them onto the fondant buttons.

Frost the top of your cupcakes and press one of the cupcake toppers onto the frosting.

If you are not going to serve your cupcakes the same day, it's best to store just the fondant cupcake toppers in an airtight container until the day you need them. Then place them on the cupcakes up to several hours before serving.

Enjoy!
