How to Cook Clams on the Grill

By Sarah Walker Caron

Love clams? They can be cooked quickly and easily on your grill in just a few steps. Here's what to do.

Step 1: Preheat the grill.

If you are using charcoal, light the charcoal and allow it to burn down (you don't want any high flames!). If you are using a gas grill, heat it on the medium setting.

Step 2: Clean the clams.

Scrub any sand from the shells of the clams before cooking.

Step 3: Place the clams on the grill and remove the clams from the grill as they open.

Clams can be placed directly on the grates to cook. Cover the grill and allow them to cook in the direct heat. Check the clams after about 7 minutes and remove any that have opened. You'll want to carefully lift them out with tongs.

Step 4: Serve.

If desired, clams can be served with a sauce made from a little garlic, butter and white wine. Simply combine the ingredients (adjust amounts to your taste) and bring to a boil. Let cook for 5-10 minutes, then pour into the clams and serve.
