You only need three simple ingredients that are usually on hand: butter, bread and cheese. Nothing else! You can totally get fancy if you have the time and ingredients, but nothing beats the classic.
This is my favorite summertime (okay, anytime) quick and satisfying sandwich, so let me show you how I make it.
Like I said, all you need are three ingredients and a skillet. Grab some butter, your favorite sandwich bread and cheddar or American cheese.
Place about a tablespoon of butter in a skillet and melt over medium heat.
Meanwhile, spread the outside two pieces of bread with one tablespoon of room temperature butter. Place one piece of bread, buttered side down, in the skillet and add two slices of American cheese or about 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese (slices work too, of course). I personally prefer cheddar, but a lot of people LOVE the American slices—they are the true classic, after all.
Cover the skillet with a lid and allow the bread to toast and the cheese to melt slightly, about two minutes. Remove the lid, add the remaining slice of bread, buttered side facing up, and give the bread a little push into the cheese.
Now carefully flip the sandwich and allow the other side of bread to get all warm and toasty. Again, about 2-3 minutes.
Remove the grilled cheese from the skillet. Slice in your preferred direction (I love a good diagonal cut) and EAT!!
It’s as simple as that, but always the best!
