Skip the stove top and microwave your pasta for an easy, delicious dinner!
When I was in college I only had a microwave (and even that was against the rules).
So you had to get really good at making things in a microwave if you didn’t want to eat at the dining hall every night – and trust me, you didn’t want to eat at the dining hall every night. That is where I first learned to microwave pasta.
I still microwave pasta from time to time…especially when it’s just me. It's interesting that it actually takes longer to cook pasta in the microwave. You have to add 3-4 minutes to the time it suggests for cooking on a stove top. My guess is because when you do it on the stove top you don’t put the pasta in until it starts to boil. When you microwave pasta it goes in non-boiling water to start. But even though it takes a tiny bit longer, it’s a simple way to cook up an easy pasta dish!
Whether you're in college or just wanting a little bit of pasta for one, microwave pasta is the way to go. Just heat and add the pasta sauce of your choice (maybe Muir Glen Tomato Basil Sauce or a cheese sauce for easy mac and cheese).
To make the pasta:
Get a microwave safe bowl and add 1/2 cup to 1 cup (I went with 1 cup because I’m a good eater) of pasta of your choice.
Add water to the bowl so the pasta is a couple of inches deep. Remember that the pasta will grow in size, so be sure to have enough water. You can always drain out the extra if you add too much.
Place the bowl on top of a plate and put it in the microwave just in case any water spills over.
Take the suggested cooking time from the pasta box and add 3-4 minutes. Check on the pasta when it's done and sample a piece or two.
If the pasta is at desired doneness, strain the pasta over the sink. If it’s not at desired doneness just put in the microwave for a few more minutes.
Place the pasta on a plate or in a bowl and add whatever sauce you would like.
