An adorable idea got us all inspired to go red, white and blue and make ourselves some patriotic shot glasses.
We found Rainbow Candy Shot Glasses over at Sprinkles Bakes and did one of those happy jigs.
After a little experimentation, we’re sitting here sipping cake vodka out of sweet little watermelon-berry-cherry Jolly Rancher™ cups, and life has never been this festive.
Wanna join us? You are NOT going to believe how quick and simple these gorgeous glasses are to make. It’s like DIY heaven. With cake vodka. Yankee Doodle would be so darned proud!
Peek into the kitchen for our step-by-step tutorial:
Everything starts here—with the Wilton™ 8-cavity silicone shot glass mold. You can buy it online and have it shipped to you in less than a week. Afraid it’s not worth it? Why, darlin’! You can also press cookie dough into that mold, and make yourself little cookie shots. You can freeze ice shot glasses. You can make your own chocolate shots. The possibilities are endless. This little tool is worth the tiny price tag.
Grab 8 bags of Jolly Ranchers™ and invite the neighbor humans to come help you unwrap. You’ll need a lot of them! Stick to unwrapping the pink, red, and blue ones. Toss the (wrapped) green and purple ones in a bowl.
Then press them around the center of each little cavity.
This part can get a little slippery. The candies may pop up and be a little stubborn. Be patient, coax them into place, then pile more Jolly Ranchers™ on top of each cup.
You’re actually going to add even MORE once the cooking process starts, so don’t panic. This is not a job for perfectionists. It’s a messy, moldable art, and there’s no way to muss it up! Promise!
With Jolly Ranchers™ piled high, place your mold on a small baking tray and pop it carefully into an oven preheated to 350ºF. Now, let the baking magic begin. The candy will slowly start to melt and slide itself down into the cavity.
At around the 10-minute mark, open your oven and see how it’s going. As the candy begins to melt, and room opens up on top of each shot glass mold, stuff another Jolly Rancher™ or two on top. Continue to do this until each mold is full of melted candy.
If any of the candy flows over the side, simply use a spoon to guide it back into the shot glass cavity.
Once each mold is melted to the max, pull your mold from the stove. Now’s your chance to make each glass perfect!
Did you overfill some of the molds? No worries! With a silicone glove keeping your hand safe from the heat, gently use a spoon to pull a bit of melted candy from any overflowing cups.
Has candy melted over the edges of some of the shot glasses? No worries! Use your spoon to guide that candy melt wherever it needs to be.
Once your molten candy has been molded, place the silicone mold somewhere cool and dry, and let it cool completely. At room temperature, it’ll take about an hour.
Note: as with all hard candy making, this project works best on a day that is dry. If it’s humid or wet outside, the candy will likely end up sticky.
Once your candy glasses are cool, they’re ready to be removed! Gently guide them from their little silicone homes.
Place them on a serving platter and keep them somewhere cool and dry until you’re ready to serve. So pretty!
And to serve? Why you’re gonna need some cake vodka and cupcake icing!
Fill with vodka and top with a swirl of icing.
Add little straws and cocktail sticks, if desired, then share with everyone you love.
Boom! Patriotic candy shot glasses for all!
