Did you know it's pretty simple to make a great tasting — and healthy — pizza at home? It's true – and it's also cheaper than ordering a pizza from a local pizzeria. I’ll give you a few ideas for making your own perfect pizza, whether you use a traditional sauce, ranch or barbeque.
- 1 refrigerated pizza crust
- 4-8 oz pizza sauce, barbeque sauce, or ranch dressing
- 8 oz cheese – mozzarella, cheddar or "pizza blend"
- Favorite toppings – Possibilities include ground beef, pepperoni, chicken, mushrooms, green olives, green pepper, bacon, or whatever strikes your mood
A traditional tomato sauce works with nearly any topping. Ranch dressing works with bacon, chicken and fresh sliced tomatoes for toppings. Barbeque sauce typically works with chicken and cheddar cheese. It’s really up to you to pick your favorite toppings. Don’t be afraid to experiment a bit.
Working the Dough
Let your refrigerated pizza dough sit out at room temperature for 15-20 minutes. As the dough gets warmer, it’ll be easier to work with. Take the dough and spread it out in your pizza pan, on a cookie sheet or a pizza stone. If you really like thick crust, you can combine two pizza crusts together. Be sure to get your pizza crust out to the edge of your pan. You don’t need to grease the pan as long as you are using a nonstick variety.
Next, prepare any meats you’ll be using for toppings. If you want to use ground beef, try cooking your beef with a little bit of garlic and Italian herb seasoning. Or brown chicken in a tablespoon of butter and garlic. Or cut up any toppings that need to be chopped, such as fresh vegetables. Make sure your topping pieces are cut in a similar size to ensure an even cooking time.
Put the sauce on your pizza crust and spread it with the back side of a spoon. It’s up to you how much sauce you want. Be sure the sauce is covering the whole pizza and add more if you want a thicker sauce.
Start layering on your toppings. The big question now is whether you are a "cheese on top" or "toppings on top" type of person. If you like your toppings soft and juicy, keep them under the cheese. If you like some toppings to get a bit crisp, put them on top of the cheese. I especially like my meats on top.
After you’ve got your pizza put together, stick it in the oven and bake according to the directions on the crust package. When you pull the pizza out of the oven, let it sit for a few minutes before slicing it with a pizza cutter. Sit back and enjoy your delicious pizza.
