Last October, two of my good friends and I went to Cape Cod with my two kids. Whether unconsciously or consciously (and it's hard to say which), we sampled fried seafood all over the Cape that weekend. And what always comes with fried seafood? Tartar sauce.
The familiar, thick, white sauce is a mayonnaise-based dip for everything from fried clams to fish and chips. It's served at virtually every seafood shack in New England (and elsewhere, of course!).
But it isn't just a roadside condiment ... you can have it at home whenever you want. Premade tartar sauce is available in most grocery stores. It's also a cinch to make at home with just a few basic pantry items.
A great basic recipe is Betty Crocker's Tartar Sauce. It is made with the basics: mayo, relish, parsley, pimento and onion. Love herbs? Herbed Tartar Sauce has an ultra-brief ingredients list, but is sure to shine with the hearty dose of chopped herbs.
Tartar sauce isn't just good on fried seafood though ... it's also a great accompaniment in a recipe like Tartar-Topped Grilled Salmon Burgers and Grilled Whitefish with Dilled Tartar Sauce.
