We'd barely even made it to the campground back in June when my son was asking if we could light a fire and make s'mores. I swear, all the months when he was asking when we'd go camping again, he really meant when would we make s'mores again.
Over the course of the week, we made s'mores around the campfire several times, collapsing into our umbrella chairs to enjoy them. Every ooey-gooey moment is special.
The funny thing is that until last year, my husband hadn't made s'mores. Me? I was indoctrinated during many wonderful campfires at sleep-away camp and I adore them ... melty chocolate, warm marshmallow ooze and a bit of crunch from the graham crackers. YUM.
But lately, I have been thinking of ways to make s'mores even better. Here's what I've been trying ...
3 Ways to Makeover Your S'mores
- Go Crazy with Your Marshmallows -- These days, the white cylinder-shaped marshmallows aren't the only kind available. From fun flavors (strawberry, toasted coconut, etc) to delectable artisanal ones, there are so many options for changing out the marshmallow on your toasting stick.
- Go Gourmet on Your Chocolate -- Sure, that brown-wrapped bar is the thing that wonderful childhood memories are made of. But as an adult, you can enjoy a fabulous bar with your toasted marshmallow and graham cracker. Try using a square of good dark chocolate or your favorite artisanal milk chocolate.
- Trade in Your Grahams -- Graham crackers are the traditional base for s'mores, but sugar cookies can work too. Or try the new Nature Valley Granola thins - which could be perfect for sandwiching a good marshmallow.
