Crunch time: A bag-by-bag snack sampler.
Get ready to get your snack on with these fab new flavors!
Hot sauce endurance, karaoke skills … there are just some talents you won’t get a Nobel for. Like Snack Smarts. I have an uncanny ability to judge a snack in a single crunch, sometimes without even opening the bag. This “snaxpertise” may never make me famous, but I feel I owe it to the world to share my gift. As a public service, here’s my rundown of six notable nibbles. Sample with me the Good, the Meh and the Crunchy.
Kimchi Tortilla Chips by Food Should Taste Good
Let’s get this out of the way: I am a fan of snacks that imitate other snacks. You know, "fruit" flavored candies, soy based ice cream. But chips that taste like Korean fermented cabbage? There are a lot of ways that could go wrong. First rule of snaxpertise: Keep an open mind. I grab a thin orange triangle. Hmmm. No skunky fermented flavor here. Just a mildly tangy party in my mouth. Crispy, salty, plenty of soul ... but Seoul, not so much.
Guacamole Tortilla Chips from Food Should Taste Good
After Kimchi, I’m a fast fan of FSTG tortilla chips. And with cilantro, avocado and Serrano peppers up in here, this one is a slam dunk. The guac flavor is real and lively, with good crispness and a tidy shape. What I wasn’t prepared for was the color: not yellow corn, not blue corn, but ... an earthy green, almost camo. So many party applications! St. Patrick’s Day, Cinco de Mayo, a Cannabis Tasting (looking at you, Colorado and Washington). A word of advice from one snack lover to another: Don’t get this one stuck in your teeth.
Chex Mix Popped — Sweet & Salty flavor
What, Chex Mix didn’t always have popcorn? After 20 big handfuls, it’s the most natural thing in the world. This one’s all about texture: crunchy Chex and pretzels, pillowy popcorn, and then there’s the caramel. We’re hitting all the pleasure centers here. Honestly, I can’t stop eating this. How many servings in this bag? Wait ... don’t tell me. I’m going to see this one through. For science.
Chex Mix Popped — White Cheddar flavor
In the life of a snaxpert, you’re going to taste disappointment now and then. But I’m not here to rain on anyone’s parade. If you’re a fan of Cheese Corn, go to town on this Chex Mix liberally seasoned with strong cheddar. Is the cheddar truly “white”? You be the judge. I’ll be over here with my Sweet & Salty.
Baked Veggie Puffs by Green Giant
Don’t get me wrong, I’m pro-Puff. But made from navy beans and potatoes? I’m on the fence. For a second opinion, I’m throwing this one to some red-blooded poker-and-sports snackers. I expected resistance—“what’s with the faux-corn curls?” But no, they emptied the bag with clear satisfaction. Shaking out the final puff, one said, “Wow, you can really taste the Navy Bean.” I should give these dudes more credit.
“Original” Baked Sweet Potato Fries by Green Giant
Here’s a snack that’s true to its name: baked, potatoey and slightly sweet. Before you grab the ketchup, this is not a fry (condiments would be a mushy disaster here, trust me). If you enjoy sweet potatoes, you’re in for a treat. Perfect puffed fingers of crunch, simply seasoned and lighter than air, like a laid-back Cheeto. Not a jumping-up-and-down riot of flavor, but strangely addictive. Two orange-tinted thumbs up.
For your next party or get together, grab a bag or two of these treats and get snacking!
