Pumpkin Pie Wontons

Magical pumpkin pie-flavored deep-fried goodness with a creamy maple dip on the side.

Ingredients

WONTONS

1/3
cup plus 2 tablespoons canned pumpkin puree
2
tablespoons light brown sugar
1
teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
2
tablespoons Neufchatel cream cheese, room temperature
20
wonton wrappers
Egg wash (1 beaten egg + 1 tablespoon water)
vegetable oil, for frying
Powdered sugar, for dusting

MAPLE DIP

1/2
cup powdered sugar
1/4
cup Neufchatel cream cheese, room temperature
1/4
cup pure maple syrup
1/2
teaspoon ground cinnamon

Directions

  • 1 In a small bowl, whisk together pumpkin, brown sugar, pumpkin pie spice and cream cheese until well combined.
  • 2 Lay wonton wrappers on a clean surface. Brush egg wash along edges of each wrapper and place 1 teaspoon filling in the center. Fold up each wrapper into a triangle shape and pinch edges well to seal.
  • 3 In a large, deep saucepan over medium heat, bring about 1 1/2 inches oil to 320°F (use a deep-fry or candy thermometer to measure temperature). Drop 3-4 wontons at a time into oil and cook 2-3 minutes each side until golden brown.
  • 4 Remove wontons with slotted spoon and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain and cool slightly. Repeat with remaining wontons.
  • 5 Dust wontons with powdered sugar.
  • 6 In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, cream cheese, maple syrup and ground cinnamon. Serve dip alongside warm wontons.

Want Want: Pumpkin Pie Wontons

As prepared by Girl Versus Dough,

Ladies and gentlefolk, friends and foes, birds of the air and fish of the sea, all 100,000 hairs on my head… I have an announcement. I have found the answer to world peace: Pumpkin Pie Wontons with a creamy maple dip.

You may think this claim is outlandish, and I admit I thought the same when I first made a go of this recipe. “What could POSSIBLY be tasty about pumpkin-cream cheese filling wrapped up in a wonton fried to a light, crispy-brown goodness and then sprinkled with powdered sugar and dipped in a sweet maple sauce?” I asked myself. I mean—right? It was a mystery.

But then, when mine eyes laid upon my creation and a single dipped wonton was laid upon my tongue, I found that nothing in this universe could fathomably be more delicious, more amazing, more crowd-pleasing and therefore, world peace-ing than these wontons. Once you try them for yourself, you too will understand.

Whipped up filling

First, whip up your filling. This combination of pumpkin puree, cream cheese and pumpkin pie spice is only the yummiest thing you’ll ever taste in your life. No biggie.

Brushing with egg wash

Brush the edges of each wonton wrapper with a little egg wash.

Filling in the center

Then place about a teaspoon of filling in the center.

Folded into triangle

Fold it over into a triangle and pinch the edges to seal.

Sealed up wontons

Make sure those puppies are closed up really well, or else you’ll cry a river of tears when you see all the filling floating out of the wontons as you fry them.

Fried wonton

Fry them up in small batches until they’re puffy and golden brown, just a few minutes on each side.

Close up of Pumpkin Pie Wontons

Mix up your creamy maple dip and dust the tops of the wontons with powdered sugar.

Dipping Pumpkin Pie Wonton

Now dip…

Bite out of Pumpkin Pie Wonton

And devour. They’re the answer to world peace, in 30 minutes flat.
