Homemade Mac and Cheese

By Scaron

Macaroni. Cheese. Crunchy topping. What’s not to love?

Like many kids, mine adore macaroni and cheese. Most times when we have it (which is every couple of weeks), we opt for the out-of-the-box variety. But sometimes it’s nice to have a wonderful baked version like Creamy Macaroni and Cheese with Crunchy Topping.

It had been awhile since I made baked macaroni and cheese, and I didn’t remember it being super easy. Still, I wanted to make the macaroni and cheese special for my daughter’s third birthday. Now, to be fair, while it is easy, it’s also labor-intensive. So, if you make this, you need to be prepared to spend a good 30 minutes at the stove, preparing the roux for the sauce, adding the milk and getting it just right and then stirring in that fabulous cheese. It’s not easy--simply because it’s very hands-on.

But that said, you don’t need to be a chef or even a cooking expert to pull this off -- it’s straightforward and has relatively simple steps. Trust me, if you can spare a half an hour to make the cheese sauce, you won’t be disappointed in the results.

This dish drew rave reviews at my daughter’s birthday party … make it for your next event and you’ll see.
