Think tofu is just a bland and boring bean curd? Well, as with many other things in life, it's what you do with it that counts. Tofu is a healthy option to add to any diet. Here are the top five ways to make tofu tasty! Everyone from your BFF to your grandma will come back for more.
Crispy Fried Tofu
Make tofu appealing to even the youngest members of your clan by frying it. Cut into 1/2 inch chunks, place in a bowl and sprinkle with soy sauce to marinate — leave for a few minutes to an hour. Fry the pieces in a non-stick pan with olive oil until all sides are crispy. If you feel like being a bit more grown up, add fresh grated ginger, a clove of crushed garlic, or a pinch or two of cumin to maximize the taste. Eat the fried tofu as it is, put it in a sandwich, or add it to a stir fry.
Tofu Scramble (Way More Yummy Than It Sounds)
Mix together: 1 teaspoon salt; 1 teaspoon cumin; 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme; 1/4 teaspoon turmeric, and 3 tablespoons of water. Use a large pan to gently fry four crushed cloves of garlic until soft. Crumble up your tofu into bite-sized morsels and chuck it in the pan. Cook it all together for 10 minutes. Stir often—you want the tofu to get crispy but not stick to the pan. Add your spicy mix, and cook for another five minutes. For additional "yum" factor, add some nutritional yeast and black pepper at the same time as the spices.
Sweet Ginger Tofu
Make a marinade by mixing 2 tablespoons of soy sauce with 1 tablespoon each grated ginger and brown sugar. Cut the tofu into cubes and marinate for 15 minutes. Thinly slice a 1/2 inch piece of ginger as you heat up your pan. Stir fry the slices of ginger for a few minutes, empty the pan and add the tofu. It takes about 5-10 minutes for the tofu to look brown. Toss in 1/2 teaspoon of dried chili flakes and the ginger. Fab served with jasmine rice!
For a snack that's quick and slick, fry up some tofu chunks coated in a mix of 2 teaspoons cumin, 2 teaspoons ground coriander and a pinch of cayenne. Add some sliced bell peppers and onion, and cook until tofu turns golden. Then wrap it all up in a tortilla — awesome hot or cold.
Mash up a block of tofu and mix in a good handful of parsley or basil that has been chopped up nice and fine. Now add 1/4 cup each of corn flour, rolled oats, and flour, as well as 1 teaspoon each of cumin, paprika and coriander. For extra zing, mix in 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme with 1/4 teaspoon of ginger and a pinch of cayenne. Once you've added 1/2 teaspoon of salt and a tablespoon of soy sauce, you can shape your patties and add to a pan with some oil and a crushed garlic clove. 5 minutes on each side should make a for a gorgeous, golden burger.
No matter which preparation method you choose, stop the tofu from becoming too mushy by first wrapping the tofu block in a dishtowel and placing a heavy pan on top for 10 minutes. This will remove any excess moisture. After that, dive right in to any of the above yummy recipes.
